Diet orders for nurses, without the phone calls to the kitchen

Nurses carry the diet order from the doctor's round to the tray, and usually the phone calls too. MedMeals puts each patient's compliant menu on a tablet for bedside ordering, alerts the kitchen to diet changes in real time and shows when each tray arrives, confirmed by OTP.

Nurses should not be the kitchen's switchboard

On many wards, every meal question ends up at the nursing station. The doctor changes a diet on rounds and a nurse phones the kitchen. A family asks what the patient may eat and a nurse checks the file. A tray is late and a nurse calls again. Nobody designed it this way. Paper simply routes everything through the people with the least time.

Nurses have a real part in therapeutic diets: confirming the diet at the bedside, helping patients eat, noticing when meals come back untouched and telling the dietitian. That work matters. The phone calls do not.

Meal work that fits into a nursing shift

  • Bedside ordering on a tablet

Take meal orders during rounds with RSOT: select the patient, the delivery date and the meal slot, then choose from a menu that already fits the patient's diet.

  • Diet changes without phone calls

A diet updated on the patient's record triggers an alert to the kitchen and the ward at the same moment. Nobody has to phone it through, and the next order already follows it.

  • Live tray status

See each order move from placed to accepted, preparing, ready, delivered and cleared, without walking to the pantry or calling the kitchen.

  • OTP at the handover

At the bed, the tray is handed over against a delivery OTP, so you know it reached the right patient. A second OTP marks the tray as cleared.

  • Families order for themselves

Attendees choose, pay for and track their own meals on their phones, so family meal requests stop queuing up at the nursing station.

  • Holds, transfers and discharges

Meals can be put on hold for a procedure or a fasting order. When a patient moves beds the diet profile moves too, and discharge is recorded on the same record, with the meal history kept.

Know the tray arrived without leaving the ward

The order view shows a live timeline from order placed to delivery and clearance, with the delivery OTP and the clearance OTP for each order. Nurses, families and the kitchen see the same status at the same time.

Meal work routed away from the nursing station

Diet changes go from the patient's record to the kitchen, family meals go from the attendee's phone to the canteen, and delivery is confirmed at the bed. Nurses stay in the loop through alerts without having to be the loop.

Nursing teams stay informed without the calls

A nursing shift with MedMeals

The meal tasks of a shift, handled at the bedside and in the system instead of on the phone.

Duty roster A day with MedMeals
  1. 07:00

    Shift handover

Each patient's diet and today's meal orders are on the record, so the incoming shift starts from the same information instead of a handover note.

  2. 08:30

    Breakfast on rounds

Take orders at the bedside on the RSOT tablet. The menu shows only what each patient's diet allows, so there is nothing to look up.

  3. 10:30

A diet change after the doctor's round

The diet is updated on the patient's record. The kitchen gets an alert and lunch follows the new order, without anyone on the ward picking up the phone.

  4. 12:45

    Lunch arrives

Live status shows the tray on its way. At the bed, the delivery OTP confirms the handover to the right patient.

  5. 14:00

A patient goes for a procedure

Meals are put on hold for the fasting period, then resumed when the treating team changes the order.

  6. 19:30

    Family dinner

The attendee orders and pays for dinner in the app, so the nursing station is not fielding meal requests at shift change.

What changes on the ward

  • Fewer meal-service errors

Orders come from a menu that already fits the diet, and the OTP confirms the right patient at handover, so fewer wrong trays reach the bed.

  • 100% diet compliance

A nurse cannot order an item the patient's diet rules out, because it never appears on the tablet's menu.

  • Fewer calls to the nursing station

Meal requests from families go straight from the app to the kitchen, and live status answers the question of where the tray is.

Still have a question? Ask our team or call +91 79845 98296.

What is the role of the nurse in a therapeutic diet?

The treating doctor orders the diet and the dietitian plans it. Nurses help carry it out: confirming the diet at the bedside, making sure the right tray reaches the patient, helping patients who need assistance to eat, observing how much they eat and reporting concerns to the dietitian or doctor, and explaining the diet to families.

How do nurses receive diet orders in MedMeals?

The diet is recorded on the patient's digital record. Nurses see it there, and when they order on the RSOT tablet the menu is already filtered to it. When the diet changes, nursing and the kitchen get a real-time alert.

Can nurses take meal orders at the bedside?

Yes. With Room Service Order Taking (RSOT), nurses or ward staff select the patient, the delivery date and the meal slot on a tablet during rounds, and choose from the patient's compliant menu.

How does a nurse know the tray was delivered?

Without calling anyone. The order's status updates in real time from placed to delivered and cleared, and the handover itself is confirmed at the bed with a delivery OTP.

What happens to meals when a patient is nil by mouth?

When the treating team places a patient on NPO or a fasting order, the patient's meals can be put on hold on the record, and resumed when the diet order changes.

Can families order meals without going through the nurse?

Yes. Attendees order from their own paid menu in the app and pay by UPI or card, and families can order a patient's meals online from the patient's compliant menu. Either way, the nursing station is not the middleman.

Does the diet follow the patient to a new ward?

Yes. A transfer carries the diet profile to the receiving ward, so the nurses there order from the same compliant menu from the first meal.
